Getting Acquainted With Your New Kitten/Cat
Cats are known for being curious, independent and sensitive.  They can be so sensitive to their surroundings, that they may require a great deal of time to adjust to the new environment.  There's a lot you can do to help your kitten/cat feel secure in his/her new home.
We're Home
It's a good idea to keep your kitten/cat confined in one room in the house for a few days.  You'll need to have a litter box, food bowl, water bowl, cat toys.  You could also have the a scratching post and there very own bed.  Once you have your kitten/cat in the room, you can let them out of the carrier.  You can stay while he/she explores the room, offer them attention, petting if they will let you.  If you have no other animals in the house, you can leave the door open slightly, but don't be surprised if your cat stays in the room for a few days.
Hiding
When you bring your new kitten/cat home, it's normal for them to hide.  Some will hide for days, or even weeks in there new homes.  They will hide under beds or in closets.  Just because a kitten/cat hides doesn't mean they are unaffectionate, unsocial or sick.  If your cat requires more hiding time, make sure it's getting food and water and is coming out to use the litter box.
Do Not forcibly pull or drive a cat out from a hiding place, this will intensify his/her fears and make the adjustment harder.
Introducing Your New Kitten/Cat to Other Pets
If you have other cats, it's best to keep the new kitten/cat confined in a Safe room for a few days while the others get use to the smell of the new kitten/cat, and vice versa.  When bringing cats together for the first time it would be best to do so when you can be around.  Encourage friendly behavior with praise and affection.
If you have a dog, keep your new kitten/cat in it's Safe room.  A dog meeting a new kitten/cat should always be leashed.  You will need to supervise the encounter, watch your dog for signs of aggressive behavior towards the kitten/cat.  Being curious is normal, but a dog who lunges at a cat is not safe.  If your dog gets along well with the cat but the cat feels threatened during the experience, let him/her retreat to their Safe room until they are ready.
Kids and Kittens/Cats
Kids and kittens/cat can be best of friends, as long as the kids understand the facts about cat behavior.
Keep these important reminders in mind:
1.   Cats DO NOT like to be squeezed, picked up by the neck or have their tails pulled.  They are sensitive to loud noises and sudden movements,  they will feel threatened if chased or lunged at.
2.  Cats Do Not like to be disturbed while eating.
3.  Most cats Do like to be scratched gently under their chins or behind their ears, and enjoy having their coats brushed.
NOTE:  It's always good to explain to your kids how to handle their new kitten/cat before you bring them home.  Once you've gotten your new kitten show your kids how to handle the new family member.
Food we recommend Royal Canin, and Purina One.
